Rooster crows only when I'm not there?

Okay, we have a young flock, about 4 months old. My Buff Orpington rooster, has started crowing. But only when my husband lets them out. He never crows in front of me. What gives? Yesterday morning, I waited around the corner so I could hear our "big boy" crowing. He started crowing, as soon as I peeked around the corner and he saw me, he stopped. What the heck? Crows multiple times when my husband lets them into the run. AND, a younger, 3 month old Silkie roo will crow with him. As soon as they see me, they stop.

While I do have one theory, in reality, I have no idea what to make of this.

Any suggestions?

I think its because they think of you as the boss and don't want to get in trouble. On the other hand, it appears as though they may be challenging your husband.

My roosters like to get into crowing matches, and some will crow together, almost like they are trying to sound stronger to impress the top roo.

LOL That was my theory! I am the main care-taker. My husband will be gone weeks at a time. This is the first time he's really fooled with them. And it's been a good bit lately. He'll take them treats and sit and watch chicken tv now. But I'm definitely the mama in a couple of ways. I'm protective over them. But I also don't play if they overstep their bounds. I'll pick up and carry around whoever for however long I want.

They only crow first thing in the morning when they are being let out - by my husband. It's like they are so full of energy and ready to run amuck and they crow in a contest it does seem. Unless I poke my head around. I've only heard the two crowing one time. I let them out this morning and it was nothing but clucks and happy dances with a little flying low out the door. At least they aren't obnoxious with the crowing. Yet.

Thanks for the reply!
