From what I understand, the FDA has now allowed for large meat packers of fowl (chicken) to allow the Chinese to do the processing. I don't understand how the system is to work, but I've been seeing on chicken packages at the store the wording which reads, " hatched, raised and harvested in the U.S.". Now the word "harvested" seems to raise suspicion with me. The whole idea of the Chinese handling our food and then sending it back to us for consumption just doesn't set right with me. All the more reason to raise our own fowl at least.

The (mostly) republicans have eliminate the source country labeling requirement for meat products. Soon you will not be able to tell where meat was grown/processed/ at all. I have a problem with sprays, rats, freeze thaw that likely happens in distance shipping.

Yes and no troublesome worker protections or oversight of slaughter methods.

I'm confused. Are they actually sending the chickens all the way to China to be gutted and cleaned up there? Does 'harvested' mean killed over her? Surely it can't be profitable to send them there and back??? If true, I'm absolutely gobsmacked

I'm betting they just have a big boat out in the ocean, international water, where they process the chickens. They do other commodities that way.

These birds are hatched, raised, and packed in China for consumption here. Most of the feed is likely made or at least grown in the USA, like the solar panels sold here but manufactured in China.

Say what you will and believe any fairy tail that you wish but the thing that drives most of America's food uncompetitiveness is FDA and EPA (not to mention USDA) regulations. I will predict that soon anyone with a back yard flock will be required to submit and follow a Federally mandated Stormwater Runoff Abatement Plan, complete with quarterly runoff water quality laboratory testing, and a daily rainfall measurement, all sent into Uncle Sugar every 90 days for his amusement and edification. This means that you can kiss free range good buy unless you can follow your flock around with a pooper-scooper.

Most of the LARGE commercial hatchery operations already have operations in Asia, mostly China. This is nothing new. The main reason is to protect themselves and their priority bloodlines from local catastrophes like the current Avian Influenza outbreak in this country..

You Californians also best get ready to buy your cage produced "cage free" eggs from China. Chinese farmers unlike the farmers there in the Golden State are not bound by California law. And International law prevents the US of A and especially California from treating those pitifully poor (sarcasm intended) Chinese farmers in an unfair way. And yet some of you laugh at Trump when he says that he will force Mexico to finance our fence on their Northern Border. Because Mexico is concerned with illegal Central American migrants crossing Mexico's Southern border Mexico just may work out something if they think that it will help solve the illegal immigrant problem on Mexico's Southern border.
Look up the word "Duck Easy" (rhymes with speak easy) to see how California law was circumvented by high end restaurants who wanted to continue serving foie gras. Even the Wacky 9th US Court of appeals and the Obama Administration came down on the side of serving foie gras.

When your grandchildren ask, "Grand daddy, where did all the good paying jobs go?" Tell them "Sweetheart, they all went to The Peoples Republic of China, riding on one of Governor Jerry Brown's Moon Beams."

Without getting politically involved and mentioning specific political parties, their platforms, and their policies, it seems to me that some of us are more concerned with the food that we find in our supermarkets than they are about whether their new next door neighbor will rise up and cut their cranium off with a carving knife.

The food from some countries is one possible source of trouble but the wrong neighbors are proving more and more problematic as time goes on yet no one that i have spoken with is willing to slap a warning label on people, except perhaps if the person to be labeled is of a different political persuasion from the one passing out the labels. Witness, "Right Wing Nuts." and other blathering psycho-babble.

The last time I saw any figures on this 40% of the canned and processed Organic food sold in this country originated in The Peoples Republic of China. Foreign producers are inspected about once every 2 years, that is if both the host country and the producer will allow the inspectors into the country.

Quote: Just for the record, jobs started leaving the good old USA long before Governor Moonbeam came on the scene. Or Obama either. Remember Hershey? They had a big plant in Oakdale, CA. Gave tours, employed lots of people, plus it was a great tourist attraction for Oakdale. Several years ago it packed up lock stock and barrel and moved to Mexico. I haven't bought any Hershey products since. I just read an article in one of the recent Smithsonian magazines that mentioned in passing the dire poverty of the deep south because the companies that employed so many of the people there have gone to Mexico, or Pakistan, or India, or wherever, and nothing has come in to take their place. One of the major employers in my little town packed up and went to Mexico after promising its workers it was staying put. Burger King was going to move its corporate headquarters out of the country to avoid paying taxes. I don't know whether they did it or not. I hope they scrapped the idea. Both parties are to blame for this debacle and I don't think either of them have made it a priority to fix it. They might be a little more interested in doing so if they ever figured out that people who don't work don't pay taxes, and a lot of people who don't work don't work because there are no jobs for them to work at. Of course actually doing something constructive about this and other issues isn't nearly as much fun as pointing fingers and blaming the other party and each other.
