I have a bantam hen that disappeared one day, returned 2 days later only to disappear again. For several days I would see her feeding and then she would slip into the woods. I tracked her to a nest under my neighbour's boat. I'm worried about an animal attacking her or the nest. What should I do . Should I move The nest to a secure brooding box or will disturbing the nest make her abandon it? Has anyone ever experienced this?

I had a similar experience, only I knew the eggs my hen was sitting on were not fertile (the cockerels were too young) so I just caught her, caged her, and broke her of her broodiness.

Do you know that your hen's eggs are fertile? How many does she have? How many days has she been sitting on them?

I have had success moving other broody hens with fertilized eggs from the coop into brooders. I simply waiting until dusk to move them. None of them had any issues going right back to the nest and sitting on their eggs until hatch.

Good luck! Keep us informed how things go.

Thanks for the input. My brother and I moved her and the nest just now. She seems cool with it. She laid 3 eggs in the coop and 2 near the coop, then no eggs for 3 days, then she was gone . There are 10 eggs in the nest, 10!!! And yes, she was the favourite of our bantam rooster Bill, we call her Hillary. I'm curious to see how this turns out. Thanks again

I would have named her "Monica"
