Hello! I'm a newbie at BYC and would love some input! I've had 12 laying hens for about 6 months now and I'm looking to get a rooster to start fertilizing some eggs. I have a couple broody hens, so should I separate those two and put them in a separate area with the rooster?

If the hens are already broody(sitting on eggs) they aren't fertile (never will hatch) because you just got a rooster. I don't know if they will accept a rooster now, as they already think they are going to hatch eggs. Hens cannot tell a fertile egg from an infertile.

You could put the rooster with the other hens. Once you confirm you eggs are fertile, replace the eggs under your broody hens with fertile eggs. Chickens cannot tell the difference in their eggs and someone else either, from what I have read.

Like Diva said, broody hens will sit on anything while broody...are the eggs fertile? If not, then you can decide if you want to leave them to their broodiness or not. If you do, I don't think the rooster is going to bother them. They will more likely be the ones to bother the rooster if he comes around! Watch and see how they do in the same are, my guess..he will leave them alone.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. You've received some good advice from the other members so I'll just say, please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your hatches.
