Hi everyone I am new to this site and just started having a flock of chickens in April. I am from MA. A few of my chickens have recently started laying so it was very exciting. I have 8 hens and 2 loud roosters (I purchased 10 "hens" but that proved not to be true). I am thinking of trying to trade or rehome the roosters but I am not sure. They are kind of funny. I have 3 Rhode Island Reds, 3 white Rocks, 2 Buff(one is a rooster named Joe), and 2 silver laced (one of them is a rooster named Henry). My 3 children named all the chickens. I am still new to raising a healthy flock. So far so good. I am a little nervous about how to care for them in the winter since last year was very cold and we had lots of snow. Any ideas? I have a heat lamp, insulated coop with electricity. I hope to learn lots from everyone!

Welcome to BYC. Don't worry about winter they are well insulated. A clean, dry, well ventilated coop and the will overwinter just fine.

Glad you joined us!

It sounds like you have a lovely flock!

I strongly suggest against using the heat lamp unless the temp drops well below 0. Not only are they very dangerous, but unnecessary. My flock is housed in uninsulated, unheated, open coops and I have had no issues, even down -5. Just make sure their coop stays dry, draft free, well ventilated, and make sure they have plenty to eat and drink and they should be fine.

Good luck with your flock!

Hi, welcome to BYC!

If you would like to 'meet' other members from your state you can find them here:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread

They can tell you how they have handled their flocks during winter, how to keep waterers from freezing, etc. I think your birds will be fine in a dry, well-ventilated coop but it's always nice to talk to others closer to you.

Have fun with your flock!
