i have four RIR who are each different in their own adorable way. My oldest always comes out of the nesting box with a loud squawk. She then proceeds to pick up leaves and twigs and tries to throw them on her back! Any ideas about this behavior?

I have noticed this behavior many times over the years. I wonder maybe if it is a throwback to the times when a feral hen would cover her nest so that predators could not locate her eggs? Sort of a genetic programming to hide the nest.
