I'm a brand new chicken owner (YAY!) but have a rooster who is bullying the hens. The rooster is 1 yr old, the hens/pullets are 3 months. They were from the same "home" so have been together for awhile. He blocks their food and water and won't let them into the coop at all! We have a secure enclosed run and they are sleeping on the ladder :( Normal? Still trying to adjust to a new home? Or just plain mean?! Any advice is appreciated.

He's being mean, a nice rooster would take care of them, I would be making a separation pen for him or not keeping him. He might be better after they grow up, but for now it doesn't sound like he should be with them.

I agree - once they are sexually mature his attitude is likely to change. Thats fine, but it will be a 3 months wait to see and even then he could just be mean. Not sure theres much difference between chicken and human personalities on that one!

Kind of thinking I should get rid of him too. But...trying to get my head around what I know I need to do. Any other option than killing him? Not concerned for him but dont know how to kill him! I may have to figure that out though. Thanks!

There's another option. You can do what I've done with my aggressive four-month old cockerel. He's trained to go out of the run and guard the outside perimeter all day, and then at roosting time, I let him into the coop to sleep.

He adores all the freedom and being able to do whatever he pleases, and the hens don't have to endure his clumsy attentions.

Roosters are very unpredictable. If I had that mean rooster I would get rid of it or it's on a bbq. Some I have worked with and they were good. But it's rare for a rooster to be nice because they always want to be boss. If you keep him ( which I wouldn't) you would need to show him who is boss.

Hope this helped!

He is old enough to know better. I can see a 3 month old cockerel being a pain in the butt and harassing them because of hormones. However at a year old he should be protecting them, not pushing them around.

You can find plenty of videos on Utube about how to kill a chicken. A sharp knife is a must though!

Good luck
