Bully Rooster

Thanks for the advice everyone. Seems my gut instinct was right on this one. (Sigh). I knew this would be part of owning chickens but hoped it wouldn't be in the first week! Guess I know what I'm doing this weekend.

I watched about 25 youtube videos on how to kill a chicken. Went out and bought myself a nice new hunting knife from Dicks AND a sharp hatchet as a backup. Never one to put things off, I marched out to the coop and grabbed the rooster. All I can say after its over that I think killing a chicken is a lot like Olympic ice skating. It looks so easy when you watch someone else and in reality....not so much. Good thing I had the backup. Please tell me this gets easier.

Sorry for your bad experience. I'm happy to send my birds to the processor; this year it's $4 for each bird, returned in a vacuum pack all done. It's worth it rather than dealing with all those feathers! Injured or sick birds are dispatched here and not eaten. It's not the best part of chicken keeping, for sure. Mary

Same here. While I CAN process my own birds, I find it worthwhile to take them to a local processor that will butcher, clean and vacuum seal them for me. I am another that will not bring injured or sick birds to the butcher. Those are disposed of at home.
