A few weeks ago I was looking at pictures of Japanese Bantams and mentioned to my wife that someday I would like to have some. Last week six eggs from show quality birds were delivered to my doorstep; and more are coming! I sure wish it were spring, but I sure hope some hatch. I should know better than to say I want something in front of the wife; I always get the item, whim or not. I am a lucky man.

Lol! Indeed you are a very lucky man! Will your good lady wife be attentive to your ramblings about chickens in the future i wonder? If so, then she is a true gem! The forum lets me bleat on about chickens to like minded people - actually i think my wife may be secretly funding BYC so i don't bore her my chicken talk

She gave me serama eggs in the spring. She is nearly as wacky about birds and animals as myself. i wonder? If so, then she is a true gem! She certainly is. Lol I said a few months back to my husband that I would love to incubate some Ayams. Well for our anniversary I had a dozen eggs show up on my door step

I am one lucky women because I was NEVER going to spend that kind of money on eggs and he did. Out of 12 I have 8 little chicks growing like weeds in their eggs and am going on day 14! We are some lucky people. Best of luck!

8 out of 12-that's great! I hope the eight all hatch; and I hope mine candle well next weekend and I have great luck. I'll be thrilled to get one nice rooster-yes rooster-I'm hoping for a rooster, but a hen will do. Of course a pair would be even better. With the seramas a little better than half hatched; it sure would be nice if that happened again.

That's awesome! I have 2 Black Japanese Banties. I was hoping I'd get a pair, but both were hens...so now I get little eggs...lol Now, just to make sure, you are aware of the lethal gene in which 25% die in shell? The gene for the short legs if they recieve 2 copies cause them to die before hatch. 50% will recieve one lethal (mutant) allele and one wild allele and will be your typical short legged birds. 25% will recieve both wild alleles and have longer than usually desired legs. So if you have some that don't make it out of the shell, don't blame yourself or think you must have done something wrong.

I am aware of the lethal gene; with that and being shipped I have a good chance of getting nothing. There was a picture showing the rooster for the eggs I received; most definitely short legged. I'll keep everything crossed and hope for the best. From what I have read chicks die in the shell because they are unable to turn in the shell to hatch. If that is true, can the chicks hatch with help-assisted hatch? I could find nothing on assisted hatch for Japanese bantams or serama bantams which also have the same lethal gene. My guess is that it is not possible?

I'm just going to horn in here and say how awesome that your spouses surprise you all like that!

@Sarafena1982 and @nchls school you have some very thoughtful spouses there. Love hearing stories like yours!
