Hey everyone, I am a newbie at backyard chickens. For my birthday yesterday my hubby built me a little coop and got me two 16 week Partridge Orpingtons. I'm in love already!! Their names are Virginia & Esther

My question for today is " are ants a big problem for my chickens?" I live in Southern California and it's still really hot here. The ants want the water. Thanks!! Super excited to be on here!

The ants could pose a threat to your chickens if there is a lot of them, what I do to get rid of ants is use garden lime. I spread it around the coop and around the feeder and waterer.

glad you have joined us.

I'm in Georgia and we have excess numbers of ants to deal with here. Have never had problem with them coming after the water - but use a hanging fount. And no problems with them getting in a hanging feeder. I store the feed in my house, outside could be an issue. But they come after spilled/scratched out feed and Melon or fruit treats left on the ground. Odd that during the summer drought never saw many in the run, but after heavy rains, the ants forage in. The biggest mistake this year was adding planters right nest to the run, ants built their homes under those and had to move them away from the area.

@jjrj254 suggested garden lime around the area, I haven't tried that, but something to investigate :)
