My beautiful birds are 18 weeks old, as much as some of them look more than ready to lay, nothing. The ones that were sqatting are no longer doing so. I'm so impatient lately. This is going to be the death of me. I can feel it.

Just wait a couple more weeks and you'll be in the egg gathering business, unless this is a heritage breed.

You might want to give it the bone test. Until the pelvic bones separate a couple fingers width they can't lay eggs. I didn't know what I was feeling for the first time I checked. I just felt the bones around the vent. On one of the pullets I noticed there was space between the bones so then I knew what I feeling for. When the pelvic bones have a space of 2 fingers width they are near to laying. It's a better way of determining if they are ready than comb color or squatting in my opinion. My RIR started to lay at 22 weeks old.
 
I have used cackle 2 or three times and never had anybody lay before 19 1/2 weeks, but most were laying by 22 weeks. I've had good luck with their birds. Not show quality but healthy good layers.
 
If those are Production Reds then they are the darkest ones I've ever seen. I thought they might be RIR or Buckeyes. Heritage RIR's don't lay until much later I believe. As I understand it, any "production" laying breed should start laying from 18-22 weeks.

You have a unique breed. They are heritage RIR, but Cackle's own high production variety. They make it sound like they should lay as well as Production Reds, but I suspect they might lay a little later, and a bit less often. Sounds like a great find though. Keep us posted on your progress! I'm sure many people would love to buy RIR's that lay almost as good as Production Reds (who are flighty).
