Im new and trying to figure this out. But I joined because I've got a hen with both eyes swollen shut. No discharge or respiratory problems. Sorry no pictures atm.

Hi!
welcome-byc.gif

Maybe try putting a wet rag and try to moisten it up so she may be able to open it?
I haven't heard of this before but, I hope this helps.

I have flushed her eyes. She hasnt been eating. Ive been feeding her. She is still laying eggs.

Did she open her eyes at all? Have you offered her water?
It doesn't sound like she will take it but she might. Hope she gets better!

Maybe you could try eye drops - neosporin or something similar. Personally i would consider antibiotics as being off her food could be something more serious than an eye problem (or i suppose its highly possible that she simply can't see to eat). Even if you choose not to give her antibiotics, you could give her vitamin supplements / electrolytes in her water - this will boost her immune system as well as replace nutrients that she is losing by not eating.

Good luck!

I think it would be good to post in fullest detail at "emergencies, diseases, injuries, cures," thread. I think her eye issue is connected to whatever is causing her to have no appetite etc. The pharmacist could help you find an otc eye drop that would hopefully make her eyes more comfortable.

you may be able to temp her appetite by offering things different from her feed, mashed hard boiled egg, warm oatmeal,. plain yogurt, watermelon, etc.

Yes after flushing her eyes she opens them a tiny bit. As for appetite she is hungry but really cant see due to her swelling. And yes I have been giving her water.
