Anyone tried free ranging their golden pheasants?

I have a 1 acre orchard which is totally walled and fenced in.. my chickens and ducks can't get out and no dogs can get in.

I love the golden pheasants and have found some near me for sale.

If I clip their wings and release them into the orchard will they stay there..... or will they be able to get up into the trees and get out? Or even constantly pace the fencing and find a gap to squeeze through? My adult chickens never attempt to get out.

My chickens go back to roost in their coop at night so don't fly up into the trees. With the pheasants wings cut are they still able to jump high enough to get to the lower branches. or run up the tree trunks?

Any thoughts?

If you clip their wings you are taking away their defense.Flight is their only defense.They may free range but that also depends on your area.Do you have any predators?Racoons,fox,coyote,dogs,hawks,eagles,owls,all will feed on pheasants if giving the chance.

We are pretty much predator free here.

I had a big problem with the village dogs getting in and ripping apart my chicken coop to kill the birds. Once I fenced in the orchard and put up 2 long concrete walls they have not been able to get back in.. and its been over 6 months.. so I a sure they have given up.

No hawks or stuff like that. Maybe only mongoose... but my birds all free range in the day and I have not lost any to a predator since we moved into this new house.

One more question is just how tame can they get? I would like to be able to sit in the garden and watch them walk around me... without them running off into the far corners of the land. Maybe they will eat feed as you scatter it on the ground like my guinea fowl?

Your best bet for friendly birds is to raise them from chicks and then again these are gamebirds and no matter how tame they may seem once they have open fields they may not be friendly enough for you to walk near them or have them come by to see you.If you can train them to come by a certain call for a treat you may have some luck with that.Which breed of pheasant are you looking to get?

Golden pheasants... just one pair to start with. I have bantam chickens that are always going broody so I am planning to put some pheasant eggs under a hen.

Going to looks a prices tomorrow... I might be exchanging some fancy pigeons for a pair of young pheasants. I would really like peafowl, but I was told they will jump over a 6 foot wall easily, even with clipped wings... so the next colourful bird seems golden pheasants.

I had guinea fowl.. but they started jumping on my chickens and chasing them as some kind of fun game.. but not fun for the chickens.. so I have just re homed them. Very quite there now.. but miss them.

We have unrelated breeders - 3 male, 8 female Red Goldens as well as an unrelated breeder trio of Yellow Goldens - 1 male, 2 females. They are beginning to enter their full color.
