Heated dog bowls, metal base heater for the metal water fountains (some make a heater with cookie tin), plastic water fountains with built in heaters, rubber livestock bowls that stay thawed longer due to being black and can be flipped over to stomp out ice block and refilled (only works well if your around the house a lot) or a few other inventive ways people have come up with to provide water in winter.

I like the rubber bowl, knock out and refill twice a day, don't have to worry about electricity.
 
Perhaps not an answer to the original question, but for those of us who live in the colder places, I like to use a bucket heater and horizontal nipples as my supplier of liquid for my birds. Worked to -15 degrees for me this past winter. I have one in each of my two coops, everyone appreciates clean fresh water in the winter.

Where did you get the horizontal/side nipples? I purchased some watering nipples and turns out they only work vertically and have been having a hard time finding horizontal ones that don't cost an arm and a leg.
 
Well I usually buy from eBay or Amazon. eBay is cheapest, then Amazon and last place is my local feed store. At the feed store they are about $3.50 each, from eBay they are much less, but perhaps come in lots of ten. Amazon is in-between the other two. All of these nipples are sold in the USA by a person in Idaho, so they all come from the same place and are the same thing. They sell direct via eBay, perhaps on Amazon as well and wholesale to the feed stores. So if you just need one, go to the feed store, for five try Amazon and for larger amounts eBay is the price champ.

Just search for horizontal nipple and you should be able to find them. I swear by these nipples, mostly trouble free, always seem to work winter or summer, well as long as you have a heater for winter use.

The bucket heater comes from Amazon, it is called ~ Farm Innovators Model H-49 Ice Chaser Cast Aluminum Submergible Bucket De-Icer, 250-Watt

The ANSI number is B000FK03E8 which should bring it straight up for you. Regarding the stock tank heaters, these work better for chickens. They sit in the bottom of a five gallon bucket and the heat being near the nipples just gives stellar performance. We have stock, and use the stock heaters for cows and such, but with them we want a hole in the top of the ice for them to drink from.

This setup is hands down the best setup for cold weather and chickens, the bucket heater comes with a built in thermostat so it only runs when it gets below forty degrees or so.
