lurkers first post

been lurking for a while now, and like I've seen from many others my first post is out of necessity due to not seeing I can offer a lot in places...
so, I have a barred rock hen that I got with two others that have a rir roo. the crew is from a hatchery (spring hardware store acquisition) and turned six months old this week. they lay about average and have been a joy to learn and grow with. we've expanded to buff's and jerseys and are in deep now wink.png
this particular hen I'm writing about has been squatting regularly for about a week, struggles to keep up foraging with her peers and is no longer laying in the nesting boxes. finding eggs on the ground in their coop tractor. yesterday she appeared to have more labored breathing and our peking ducks have begun to bully her sad.png and the bullying is bad, she just gives up and the roo tries to defend, two against one though.

what do y'all think? any help is appreciated!

Hi and welcome. I'm honestly not sure whats wrong with her, but you may wish to consider isolating her and put vitamin supplements / electrolytes in her water and seeing if she perks up. The laboured breathing could at least suggest some kind of respiratory condition but i would not like to say for sure. If she is still laying, thats a good sign at least.

If she does not improve in the next week or so, you may wish to consider antibiotics, but please read the many threads on respiratory problems on BYC before you make your decision.

All the best

Sorry your first post isn't under better circumstances. I would isolate the wheezing girl, give her electrolytes and watch for other symptoms. Is she eating and pooping ok?

You could post over on the emergency thread with a complete description of all her symptoms and see what the experts over there can tell you:

Good luck to you, hope your girl is better soon.

thank you both.
she did not roost with her friends last night. so isolation begins today. she was out for a bit and foraged well.
clearly I'm lacking experience, it seems to be matching the description of a hen struggling to lay as I've read in other posts...

thanks again
