Hello fellow chicken lovers!
I live in Oklahoma City and have 2 backyard chickens named Lucy and Ethel who give us 2 eggs a day and we are loving it! They have a coop but prefer to sleep in the trees. We've had them for about 4 months now and they are always entertaining to watch.
I am new to chicken raising so your website has helped me greatly when researching proper chicken care. I'm glad to be a member!

Aww....they are adorable! I have two Barred Rocks named Lucy and Ethel.

I would be careful with letting them sleep in the trees as at one point you will lose them to predators. Something will pick them off during the night. Come winter they will need shelter from the cold and wind as well. So you might lure them into the coop before they head to the trees at night. Use food or treats. A few nights of sleeping in the coop and they will prefer the coop over the trees. They sleep where they feel safest. Get them retrained and they will always return to the coop.

Lucy and Ethel are lovely gals and I know you are proud of those eggs.

Do take TwoCrows advice and retrain them to sleep in the coop.

They may prefer the trees because the coop looks like it doesn't offer them a roost off the ground. You could consider adding walls to the run and place roosts there?

Thank you for the warm welcome and the great advice! Our roost has a ramp that leads to a 2nd floor and roost that's off the ground so I need to start working on retraining them to sleep in there soon because the weather here is starting to cool down. I probably have a month or so before the really cold weather sets in. Luring them in with food is a good idea!

Also if they don't sleep too high in the trees, they won't move in the dark. Maybe you can grab/ or net them them and stick them into the coop - before something else grabs them.
