My buff Orpington pullet is acting very funny today. They free range all day. They only go into the coop to roost and lay. She is about 5.5 months old or so. I have had her about 1.5 months. She is normally hanging out with the other hens(5) but today she is sitting below the roost in the shaving. I have examined her and don't see any bleeding, missing feathers, or any problems. She has been there all afternoon. She doesn't jump up into the roost or nesting box. Her tail feathers are lowered and she almost looks puffy and sad. I have taken her out and she doesn't mix with the the others and goes back inside. Has anyone's buff acted this way? Is she sick? I looked at her poop and didn't see any blood. Is she about to lay for the first time and doesn't know what's happening? Please help!!

You say she's 5.5mo old? Has she started laying yet? My BO started that type of behavior just before she started laying. She'd dig out a rut and lay around in it for hours. If she hasn't started laying yet, I'd say she's about to.

I made a mistake about her age. When I bought her the man said she was laying but that was 1.5 months ago and no eggs. From all that I have learned over the last months, she was too young to lay yet. Maybe she is closer to 7 months old now. She has never laid before.

My Buff started laying and just under 21 weeks. Hens will often get a bit antisocial when they are about to start. I think she's ready. If she's 7 months, she's already late to the game.
