Hey, I'm new!

Anyways, one of our girls didn't go in the coop at night Wednesday night last week, and around 1 in the morning she was attacked by something. We caught her and have her in a dog crate while she heals, but we aren't sure what got her or how to help her. She was pretty much scalped, I can see her skull even! Her comb looks like it was torn off, and both eyes were initially swollen shut. One eye is open again now, but the other is still too swollen for her to see. I am worried she might be missing that eye. Her tail is gone, and several loose feathers all over the place that she is trying to preen off. The back of her neck is also bare, though the skin wasn't removed. We haven't seen her eating or drinking, so we aren't sure how to help her in that regard either. Any advice would be dearly appreciated.

Keeping her isolated, warm and comfortable is a good start.
You need to clean the wounds with a gentle soap and water, a warm compress to the eye a couple of times a day may help the eye. She will not like you for this, but it has to be done. If the wounds looks clean just apply a little Neosporin (without cain) to them, don't saturate, a little goes a long way.
Put some vitamin mix in her water, if she won't eat solids, mix her a little scrambled egg, tuna or even mash from her crumbles - whatever she will take.
If you can afford and have a chicken vet nearby, a visit would be in order. If not, see how she goes. Chickens are remarkably resilient and as long as the wounds don't get infected she'll likely do fine. Please keep us posted,

Thanks for the advice! We'll do our best for her, and hope and pray for her. I'll keep you updated as it goes, hopefully she'll be alright. She's made it this far. My mom is doubtful that she will make it, but I feel that she will since she's made it this far. Mom says that she's seen evidence of the hen eating now, and I've seen her preening a little bit too. I'll try bathing her and everything like that tonight.
 
Well, our hurt hen is alive and on the mend. She never did let us clean the wound or do anything with her eyes, but she is preening and otherwise acting much better. I'm concerned about the skin and feathers growing back, but for the most part she is mostly healed. She is starting to act like her old self again.

Good news indeed! I'm always amazed at how resilient they are.

From her wounds, everyone that I talked to said that it sounded like a fox got her. I think I saw it a couple of nights ago, still hanging around. But it could have been a small dog, I'm not sure. I honestly didn't think she was going to make it, but here she is going strong. This is my first experience with something like this, and I am amazed at what they can withstand.
