New forum member. I've been reading here and learning from all the great info on BYC for a few months, off & on. Getting ready to build a coop & run for the chicks that I hope to acquire in the spring. Wanting RIR's or Red Sex Links for laying hens. I want something that will produce and allow interaction my me and the grandson. Hoping to get about 6 chicks to start with.

We have 4 acres to play on but really not interested in free ranging the flock. Really just want to have a large pen and maybe a tractor pen for them to range around the lower portion of the place.

I hope to get active in discussions and learn from all of you experienced BYC'ers. Maybe within time I can share my experience with others on here.

A very warm welcome to BYC from Kenya

Sounds like you have a good plan in place already. There is lots of info on the Learning Centre and a forum on coop design - enough to make you dizzy - so keep on reading, but don't be shy in asking any questions you may have.

All the best

Good for you on building the coop first and getting the chickens second. A lot of people seem to get chicks first, find out how fast they grow and then scramble to build a coop. If you aren't sure which breed to get, why not get a few of each so you can see the differences and decide which you prefer for the next time you want to add chicks (and that will most likely happen...they are addictive). Just be sure to make that coop plenty big!

Have fun, you and your g-child are in for a real adventure!
