Hello Fellow Bird lovers,

My pair of ducks are 2 years old and they are having there autumn molt at the mo.
Ive heard about having to pluck blood feathers which I hope Il never have to do because that sounds horrific however my lady duck has had problems with her tail feathers during this molt so I thought id throw this out in to the forum to people have more knowledge.

She has almost completed moulting but I noticed some feathers from her tail were half hanging off for a longer time than normal and once they had fallen I had noticed the tip of the feather didnt look right.

.

Normal tail feather on the left and weird one on the right.

Now she growing her feathers back and there seams to be issues with the new feathers coming through on her tail.

I was wondering if anyone no's if these feather's will these sort them selfs out or am i going to have to pluck them?

There is around 5 roots on her tail like this and one feather still on the wonk waiting it fall off.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post :)

@Bloo Welcome to BYC

I think I'd just leave alone for now feather pulling means quite a bit of blood, so just keep an eye on them for now and up her protein I have been using high quality dog kibble and cat kibble as added protein while mine are molting plus some poultry vitamins in their water. Maybe try doing this and see if it helps her finish up her molt and get her feathers back in sleek and glossy i have a few who's wing feathers are dragging on the ground right now they are so close to coming out very tempting to try and help but I don't having seen how much having blood feathers bleed

Thank you for replying.
Good Idea il hive her some meal worms and add vitamins to her feed :) hopefully that will chear her up aswell and giving her a boost.

Ive given her a warm salt bath as I was worried they were infected and I also have tweezers off the very ends off of the stumps (the black part) which revealed feather fiber's so thats a relief that it wasn't actually full of blood. Hopefully they can grow out now that there is a route for them to exit.

Sounds like your on top of it, with any type of salt though be careful they don't drink the water they can become dehydrated and with Epsom salt it is a laxative.
