New and need advice

First off I want to say thank you to all who may answer. I have decided to raise some chickens for eggs, maybe around 6 or so. My question is what breeds are best for this. I have plans for a coop design, my father raised chickens but has passed away so I can't get any advice from him. If there are any threads that may be beneficial please paste them. I'm new here and have been searching through here lol. Thank you.
 
Hi,

I guess the breed you choose depends on what you want to keep chickens for. If its for eggs, then I'd suggest looking through here and the net to see what breeds produce the most eggs (typically commercially developed ones).

There's a whole forum on coop design here at BYC, so check that out and see what may suit you. Personally, i use my garden shed which is great since i can adapt it how i like and accommodate more chickens whenever i wish

I suggest the Black Australorp. I raise Black Australorps and they don't let me down. Very docile, friendly, calm, early maturing, large brown eggs, they are a dual purpose eggs and meat, and can handle the heat and the cold.
 
Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. If sheer egg production is your main priority, the best layers in the world are White Leghorns (for white eggs) and Sex Links (for brown eggs). These are the hens used by laying houses as they are egg laying machines. I especially love the Black Sex Links (Black Stars) as they are very friendly and hardy and very persistent layers in really cold winter weather. I raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds and hybrids) and they have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 large brown eggs per hen per year with double yolks not being uncommon. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breed you decide to get, good luck with your flock.

If you're wanting meat the Black Australorp is dual purpose making it an excellent breed of both worlds. Awesome in egg laying and they make good meat birds. Since they are docile and can be tamed easily they can make great pets. If you want Easter colored eggs go with the Ameracauna.

It can help you figure out which breed (or breeds) works best for you taking into account your weather, egg production, flightiness, etc.

You're welcome. I agree with Birdrain92 regarding standard dual purpose breeds (meat and eggs); Australorps are in my opinion the best all around dual purpose breed as they are excellent layers and have a decent amount of meat on them. In addition they are extremely hardy in both heat and cold as well as being calm and gentle birds. Our children and granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) had no problem making lap pets of our Australorps.
