This chick has me stumped on both breed and gender.

I had a broody who wouldn't give up, so I stuck 4 eggs under her back in August and she hatched out one chick. Not really thinking ahead, I didn't make note of WHAT eggs I gave her so now I'm wracking my brains trying to figure out what mix of breeds little Nugget could be. Nugget hatched on Sept. 8 so was 6 weeks old yesterday.

Here are some photos - some with the flash and some without. The flash better showed the buff color up front, but the pictures without show the whiter back end better.

The mom candidates include white Plymouth rock hen, white leghorn hen, golden comet (red sex-link) hen, barred rock hen, buff orpington hen, black australorp hen. Of the breeds, it's least likely that it's a barred rock, buff orpington or black australorp hen as those were my newest layers and were only laying small and infrequent eggs at the time.

The dad candidates are a barred rock roo or a buff orpington roo. I'm leaning towards the buff due to the buff coloring paired with my thought that I didn't give the hen a buff egg.

The thing that has me really confused, and which may not show up well in the photos, is that Nugget has a bit of dark wash on the legs and around the beak.

Anyway, if you want to take your best guess as to where Nugget came from and if it's a roo or pullet, please do so! I'm curious!

Adding two more photos of Nugget the day he/she hatched. It shows at least some of the eggs that the hen sat on. The other 3 eggs turned out to be duds.
