Hi everyone! This will be my first guessing game thread! Ill continue to update as the weeks go on. My little Maran is just going into his/her 3rd week. Are there signs to point at the direction of the gender? This the the mystery of straight run chicks.. Here's some pics of Ninja!
 
The odd photo color is throwing things off, but I think you have a rooster. BCM roo's telecast very early. I knew at 2 weeks who the roo was in my last batch of them.

I would say it looks like a cockerel... and also, not a Black Copper Marans... it is barred, so my guess is probably a Cuckoo Marans maybe...
 
You think so? He is pretty black to me and the breeder (shady craigslist breeder...) said it was a black copper maran. Maybe its just the brooder lighting?
 
Ah ic very true. Man bummer... first I find out it isn't a she and now it isn't even the right kind of bird. Oh well ha

Yes..I saw the barring too and forgot to comment. You likely have a Cuckoo Marans but definitely not a Black Copper.

One chance of hope for pullet, if the bird's comb is yellow and stays yellow, and the barring comes in crisp, you might have a Barred Rock, and commercial line BR pullets can develop quickly.

If the legs are yellow, or yellow with a black wash down the front, it is a Barred Rock. Marans should have grey or whitish legs.

If you see foot feathers, too, it is almost definitely Cuckoo Marans.

But if the bird was represented as a BCM, that would be in total error. As the other poster stated the white dot on its head forecasts the barring or Cuckoo to come.

Thank you for the info! I will be really bummed if this was not a Maran.. Ill take some clear pictures of the legs when I get home after work!
