San Francisco, ca
Hello, I am a first time proud owner of 1 orphanton, 1 Australop, and 1 silver lace Wyandotte chickens. They are all about a month old. My question / problem is that I live in the city San Francisco, and our backyard is all cement.
My chickens love taking baths in their chick crumble. What can I use to substitute for their "baths"? What kind of dirt? Or is it ok to use playground sand?

Hi there, congratulations on your new arrivals

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I use a flat box of wood ash for my chickens to bath in. They love it and wood ash is better at controlling lice and mites than dirt or sand. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

I have coarse sand in my coop and I mix wood ash in their favorite bathing spots. I've seen some people put dirt or sand in an old tire for a "chicken sandbox".

If you have a sandbox laying around, it would make a great dirt bath. Ones with a cover, can also keep it dry and cat free when the chickens aren't outside.
