Leaves in coop

We do, along with grass clippings, pine needles and straw.

ETA: Oops, I mean in our run. In the coop we use pine shavings. Sorry.

I use Leaves and grass clippings in my run. In the coop we use sand and PDZ. The girls love it and it's super easy to clean with a kitty litter scooper.
 
I use a combination of whatever I can find - pine shavings, leaves, grass clippings, weeds and trimmings from the garden, chopped straw - whatever! In winter I'll go a little heavier on the shavings because there's not much decomposing going on when it's 20 below zero anyway, but I'll have bags of dried leaves set aside and ready to get added in whenever I think it needs it. I briefly considered sand but realized that even though I could pick up the droppings, the moisture from them would have already been absorbed by the sand. Moisture + subzero temps = a pretty doggone hard surface to land on,and it's cold to boot! Besides, with the other stuff I like to watch the girls dig little hollows in and snuggle down into the warm spot they've made for themselves.

I use it here is So Cal. The girls dust bath, but it's not something they burrow in. It is however very absorbent and dries very quickly. I understand moisture in a winter coop is a cause of frostbite and other issues. They will be roosting at night, so a draft free ventilated coop is paramount. For warmth, I would think deep litter would retain more body heat when burrowing.
 
That's what I thought. Gonna try dweo litter method this winter. Gets real cold where I am.
