Geese on Blackberry Canes

What should I do?

  • Make a chicken door in the shed and let the chickens work it for a year before installing a geese do

I am keeping my geese (along with chickens and a turkey) in a 3 sided shed with the open side fenced in. I did so in order to grow some rye grass for the winter. To the side of the shed I have an area that has been left wild under a huge Water Oak tree. A couple months ago I went in and cut the underbrush that had grown up. I was thinking of making a second pen to let the fowl enjoy while their rye grass was growing. When I went there yesterday to burn some of the limbs I noticed that the blackberry canes were very sharp. and spread out among the leaf-litter from the Oak. There are also "mini-stumps" from the underbrush I cut that make walking uneven. I am sure my chickens would love to go and mess around in the leaf litter and the turkey could have its fill of acorns but I was wondering if the blackberry canes, and other spiky vines, and brush stems might irritate the geese's feet.

I'd think it may cause bumble foot if any sharp thorns or stems were to break the skin on their feet. i don't think i'd let any of my poultry on it actually .
 
Thankfully I have never had to deal with bumble-foot but I think I have seen it mentioned on here a fair bit. I am pretty sure the chickens will be fine since they go into similar areas all the time and haven't had trouble. The geese for the most part don't have blackberry canes where they typically go. Though I have noticed it growing a few places by the pond it never gets very big unlike the stuff in the area I was clearing.

We have been very wet here (@9 inches 2 weekends ago and it would seem at least 6 this weekend) so the rye grass is growing fast and I believe it will be ready in a couple more weeks. They will be excited to get at it and also back to their water hyacinth removal job.
