I am new to the incubating/chicken raising thing. I live/work in Africa and am giving this a try for fun. Incubated 10 eggs and have 6 that I candled at 18 days and were still active. Today was day 21 and 2 have hatched and the others are rocking and pipping. I think only one egg may not have pipped. The two that hatched are very rambunctious which makes me nervous they will break the other eggs but they aren't dry enough to take out.
Appreciate any wisdom and have found BYC to be very useful in the process.

There are some very good articles about incubating in the Learning Center that may be helpful to you:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/hatching-eggs-and-raising-chicks

And there is a forum for you to post questions about it here:

It sounds like things are coming along well with your hatch, share a picture of your new chicks if you'd like. Pictures are always nice!

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Things sound like they are ok and you have nothing to worry about. Hatched chicks often knock other eggs about when they have hatched with no ill affects. I've had the incubator cram packed with eggs and chicks and things have been fine.

As you can see in the pics it gets pretty full. Chicks and eggs are far stronger than you think.

The links that NorthFLChick left for you have some great info, I'm sure you will find it a good read.

Good luck with your hatch :fl

Enjoy BYC :frow

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!! New baby chicks are so much fun! The ladies who posted before me possess a wealth of knowledge about chickens so if you've got any questions they will surely have wise advice or will be able to guide you in the right direction. Welcome to the BYC community! Glad to have you here!

Sometimes the newly hatched bumping around and chirping - inspire they others to pip. Sending good hatching vibes your way

Hi,
So they all died one by one! I have no idea why. They would go extra sleepy, then start shaking, turn their necks, flip over and die! It was rather awful as one minute they were totally fine and the next minute dead. I am cleaning everything and starting over. I currently have 14 eggs in my incubator that are on day 4. I candled and it looks so far as if 12 are fertile and have growing embryos. My incubator seems to work just fine as the chicks hatched very well previously.

I'm doing this in Tanzania East Africa, because I work and live here and am originally from Missouri.

I am receiving pullets Saturday from a new supplier which is also where I got the eggs from that are currently in my incubator. Fingers crossed they don't all die! Any suggestions would be helpful....as far as I can understand from the locals I am incubating and trying to raise a mixed breed between a local chicken and what they call a "modern" chicken. Sorry, I know that isn't very helpful in describing the breed.

As they grow i will try to post photos and maybe someone can help better identify the breed.

Thanks,
Rachel (very much a Newbie)
