Well, it was suggested to me I believe by @henless that I create a singular thread, sort of a "master post" if you will, for all of my questions so that I can keep them all in one place and it will be easier to keep track of and look up answers.

Now, I of course have made a few random threads here and there since I've been here just as I thought of questions and did get some good answers but that's okay, they already got answered and it's not too hard to go back and look, just not the easiest or most convenient. What I'm hoping this will be is a place to make it easier for the future so I can have stuff in one thread and refer back to it so thank you to henless for the idea!

Currently I don't really have any questions but I will add to it as I think of them.

But so let's have an intro for those who don't know me. Some of this is in my signature but you can't see that on mobile anyway and this is convenient so here we go:

My name is Kelsey, I'm 21 and live in Massachusetts so does get cold but also hot in summer. Not too bad either way though. Still with my parents and on about 3 acres. I do have a dog and a cat but this thread is about the chicken questions and that info's in the signature if anyone cares sooo..

I ordered 9 chicks from Meyer Hatchery on September 18th and.they hatched Monday October 26th (just turned a week old Monday) and got here Tuesday. I had 2 each of Barred Rock, Black Australorp, Buff Orpington, and Easter Egger and 1 Meyer Meal Maker, their free chick. All female I think. Unfortunately, one of the Barred Rocks passed away on Sunday so we are now down to 8 chickens. Also, I believe that the free chick is another Buff Orpington which I am thrilled about but someone said all 3 of their extras were Leghorns so we'll see. She looks exactly like her sisters though. So yeah.

They were initially going in the garage but was worried about mice so moved them and have been in our bathroom since day one but fortunately it's being remodeled so torn up anyway. :p however, we just bought hardware cloth yesterday so today they are moving out to the garage, cleared a spot and working on that now.

Oh and I am also using the Mama Heating Pad method but I am bad and didn't get the proper wire frame set up until I think Sunday or Monday (was using their box). Pad also broke Sunday and had to get another but that's not why the chick died.

All appear to be thriving now.though, LOVE the new frame, and are growing SOOOO fast. :(

I have a Dropbox album and will post that later for those interested.

So yeah. Kind of a master question post thing

Oh and I also did think of one question but posting it separate, I'll post all the questions separate and leave the main post in tact.

So.

Question 1.

How old should they be to allow them outside? I know the garage is cold but I don't mean to live out here, I mean like outdoor playtime during the day. I was thinking maybe 2 or 3 weeks?

A broody will have them out after she comes off the nest, usually after day one. So you can take them out for a limited time now. If you move their electric momma out with them so they have a place to warm up the time becomes limited only by dark or bad weather. Of course the electric momma won't be able to watch out for them so you have to do that.

Thought of another question: I'm making the chicks a new brooder in the garage (I will make a thread on that) and using hardware cloth to either go around the space, like make a custom size, or to go around the kiddy pool for now (we have a larger one I would switch to) but obviously I don't think HC is free standing? what do I attach it to? We got (4) 5 foot green metal fence posts but I'm not sure they'll work or really how to do it. I think you need bolts? And there's really nothing to attach it to in the garage unless I got pieces of wood? They were supposed to be out tonight because my brother's coming home soon but I'm thinking it will have to wait.

Here's what I've done so far. Putting cardboard down on top of this. Then either the pool or the shavings depending on what I do.

You can see there's really no place for the HC

Was gonna use a tarp or something and may still if it's better but my mom got these yesterday and there's plenty so using them. 3 mil plastic so perfect. Though they're obviously closed so it might even be thicker. Had to use 8 though, 4 on bottom and 4 on top, but that's okay. And again, putting cardboard down.

Thanks so much for the information! I guess I just worried that they were still so small and fragile but you're definitely right that a broody would have them out, I hadn't even thought of that or of bringing MHP with them, so I will have to bring them out. :) may start small, like in the garden or something, though

I don't know either, but I always end up with punctured fingers and ripped arms when I work with the stuff.
One precaution a person can take is to use some masking tape to tape the cut ends so as not to be so dangerous.
Tape down one side and fold it over the other.
