Hey everybody. I am new to this site and new to raising chickens. I have 2 silkie Roosters, Pete and Repeat, and 3 Bantam Nankins;a rooster named Cooter and his 2 hens, Thea and Louise. As far as taking care of them, I am lost as las years Easter egg.

You have Nankins? They are cute. I hatched some yrs. ago, from a BYCer here..got some eggs from him. Long time ago. Don't have them now. But loved the way they were, just cute and mine were pretty friendly.

Here they are as pullets.

Here a baby.

Hello and Welcome to BYC!!! I agree with sourland you need more hens for your roosters.

One rooster can handle 10 hens. If you don't have enough hens per rooster, they will physically damage them by overbreeding, pulling out feathers & scratching them up with their spurs.

Unless less you want to breed purebred chicks, or sell fertile eggs etc. There is no need for multi roosters. Hens will be much happier without them and continue to lay just as many eggs.

If you haven't been to the Learning Center yet, check it out. There are a lot of great articles there that will get you off on the right foot:

Good luck to you with your birds!

I have gotten conflicting information about my Silkies. Some tell me I need to put a heat lamp on them if the temp drops below 60; others tell me that they are very tolerant to cold. I am slightly confused. It is supposed to get down to 35 Wed night. Do they need heat?
