I recently purchased a Cuckoo Maran pullet from a junky feed store. Upon arriving home we noticed she had one lame leg. I figured it was due to an injury. I took her to the vet today, and she is being treated for septic joint. The vet gave me an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory. Currently, my pullet seems to be acting normal, doesn't seem to be in any severe pain (puts weight on both legs), and the vet said that other than her leg, she seems to be very healthy. Any knowledge or advice would be greatly appreciated. I love this pullet and will do anything to help her. Thank you ~ Stacey

 
She is going to need a probiotic as well to prevent any flora/fauna issues/imbalances in the gut. The vet can prescribe some, which are very effective, or you can make do by giving her a few teaspoons of yogurt/buttermilk/organic ACV each day. The probiotics should be given as long as the script for antibiotics and then for an additional 14 days.

Antibiotic usage carries its own risks which is not to be taken lightly. It would be a shame to fix the leg only to have her end up with sour crop and/or diarrhea and dehydration from a GI bug imbalance after.

Remember that some oral antibiotics should not be given with dairy products as they can bind with calcium. :D

Thank you for your help. The vet kind of gave me a feeling that she didn't know too much and just wanted to "try" with antibiotics. That always makes me nervous. I'm wondering if I should just give her the anti-inflammatory in case she's in pain. But I guess it won't do any good if she will still have the infection :( the meds are clavamox and metacam. I'll keep doing research. Don't want to make her worse. Thanks
