Surviving Minnesota!

Just cold turkey?! Every feeding is gone or take away one at a time?
We feed him 3 times a day. Temps are getting cold here too so I was wondering if that changes weaning now or not. Or what? I really don't know.

Yep. No more feedings at all. He will drop a stop growing for a few days but will be back to normal in no time.

Judy says it is a hen....Coffee she told me to pet it and see if it lays an egg in front of me.. I told her only you could do that, as the chicken Whisperer.. Wanna come whisper to the chicken for Judy?

Being a new chickener, this post explains alot to me about the way chicks fool a person to thinking she is a he and then they lay an egg. Stinkers!

Thats a boy. Look at his legs. They are huge for a hen. I am naming it Leslie for you since itis confused about genders. Lol if you were me you would be laughing about the name reason!!

Opps I meant to grab Jerry's post again,, sorry

And I think I made an error when grabbing pictures to post, I think the one is the "rooster" with the identity problem.

I can't wait to start hatching. I am going to clean my room and start setting up a brooder. Yep in my room that way they will always be with me.

This is the one you say is not pure?

I have to make sure I understand so I can take the proper actions.
The comb does not look single in the picture . Not much white in the ear lobe . I could be mistaken about the comb . Pictures are hard to tell . Anyway those are the red flags I saw .

He doesn't drink a lot of water right now (literally hardly any). Is that because of the 3 milk feedings or other reasons. My worry is that he could become dehydrated waiting on us for milk. Or am I being way too worried because this is my first time with a calf and every little thing has me in a panic? Just........breathe..........he will be fine right?

You just stop giving it milk all together. He will baul for it but don't give in!!

We used to have 350 beef cattle across the highway from us. That was when we were still young. We did not have A/C either. There was a fan in each corner of the bedroom pointing up toward the center of the ceiling to move the air around. Of course the windows had to be open. Whew! August heat, 350 head of cattle across the highway (just two lanes in that highway) and then weaning the calves. Smelly, noisy, hot! Ohhhhh those were the days.

It is normal to be over worried I was too!! He will start drinking water once he realizes milk is a thing of the past.

That is the comb youget when you cross a pea combed bird with a single combed bird. My roos had combs like that since the dad was a Welsummer and the moms were Easter eggers and Brahmas.
