Surviving Minnesota!

Kinda has some very nice birds. Columbian is a very very hard variety to get right. It takes a lot of birds to get a few birds with good pattern on them. How old are your birds?
3 months.

That's what I've heard, it's interesting that with some groups it comes up and with some it's doesn't. For example, I've had hatchery stock brahmas from a couple different places. From mcmurray the lights had the partridge patterned spots but the buffs didnt. From cackle both the lights and buffs did not have spots. Usually the chicks have shown it right away, the mcmurray lights were almost completely black while the cackle lights were a solid yellow.

I can try and get some pictures of them, though it doesn't make much of difference with this batch since they are all males anyway lol. There's one that I would consider "lighter" than the rest but not by much.

One of our other hens was setting on a couple eggs from our hens (before they shut off) and they would be either a pure buff, pure light, a combination of both as we had a light and buff rooster and light and buff hens. They are only a day old but they are completely yellow, no black on them. Since we had that light rooster in the mix, I'm not sure what we are going to end up with....since if I remember correctly, the buff over light would make sex links and light over buff would make lights but with yellow on them.

Just jumped on facebook real quick today and saw this, hopefully it doesn't spread

DISEASE ALERT: The Minnesota Board of Animal Health has been informed that Virulent Newcastle Disease virus (vNDV) in double-crested cormorants (DCCO) has been confirmed in a Minnesota county (Wright) and is suspected in another Minnesota county (Meeker). Confirmation comes from Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the National Wildlife Health Center (NWHC) in Madison, WI.

I've tipped my toe into the ring for helping our lake association help acquire a AIS cleaning station. We got a new DNR boat ramp in town and the same year coincidentally Eurasion Milfoil was found at the city docks. I think the Eurasion pre dated the new launch. Nonetheless, they seemed to have got the new weed after a treatment in 2017 and 2018. Nothing cropped up this year... But to have a new boat launch with not a scrap of education or tools to help people clean their boats before AND after of course is there. Just a big orange sign saying it's infested! So I asked my Lake Association when the DNR built the ramp were they ever going to put in a clean station. I learned that they do not go together. And not even on an infested lake. Wow. And then was asked to help do some leg work. Here we go...

The county will help with half of the machine and we are looking to ask the Lake Association for the other half. It was. like. asking for a first born. "yeah but", "yeah but", There ARE somethings I'm learning. Insurance is needed, etc, etc. But the outcome of what we want is all the same I do believe and that's to protect lakes. IDK.... Just need people to put in the work. And that's where they drop like flies.

we don’t have enough land to go into breeding or anything like that.

My biggest mistake/regret is not getting five or 10 acres of land when I bought my house. 2.25 acres of woods doesn't work for bigger animals. Maybe in a few years I'll finally convince myself to move off grid on 20 acres somewhere.

Love the Highlands!

Thanks! They’re beautiful animals. They make me think of little bisons. :love(I know the plural of bison is bison, (lol) but I just like it better with an “s”.)

My brother and his wife are building off-grid. Forty acres and the covenants forbid livestock! Go figure that one out. They plan to sneak in a few chickens when they’re done building, but seriously? Why did they DO that??

Good day everyone . I am at the lake building again . Hey I see on the news about rattlesnake sightings . Be careful if you are near that area . Love these cool mornings . Janet had 2 blankets and the fan on . 57 in the camper . I did not have a fan on .
