Surviving Minnesota!

Is there a way for me to tell what egg came from a hen on a certain day without separating the hen? I want to discern which eggs are from my CX hen

Some use food coloring in the vent area . Leaves a streak of color on the egg . Does not last long ..I usually put 1 hen at a time in a cage or carrier for the day . Once I get her egg then I release her . If they are new layers check the vent for signs of laying . Large moist opening .

I live in a different county then I think you are going to build. But I have done 2 systems. Last one was a mound system. We had to have a certified guy draw up the plans and get approved but we did all the work then the inspector came out and said yep. that was it far as I know

Cool. I want to identify the eggs from my CX to hatch and that should do it. I am fairly certain I know what egg is hers but not 100%

Ralphie can you confirm that CX eggs are lighter brown with lots of dark specks and usually fairly large? And if memory serves me, they usually are kind of rough too, though that may just be her?

Sounds good . I was told I had to be licensed but I looked it up on line and the owner can do his own .

Bogtown, glad it was an easy (and cheap!!) fix.

Coffee, I hated putting them in the trash. I always put them in a little baggie. Makes me feel better thinking they might not get dug out and eaten if in a baggie.

Ralphie, I hope your girl is ok. You give them such a good life.

Ok, cripes!!! I've been trying to catch up on reading for 3 days, been busy as heck, but each time I try, I read one post and you guys type 5 more!

There is another abyss of money loss. The dang septic systems!! And basically every one in my county is mound (does that even make sense!!!) Obviously another scam of folds of people working together to make loads of money off the folks who work hard for it.

You can save quite a bit doing it yourself . When I did mine they were still doing concrete tanks . Now you can use plastic . Easier to handle . Hire the digging and do the rest . Rent a bobcat yourself to cover it up .

We bought a concrete tank. We did all the work except haul and place the tank. the last rental for cover had to be one with tracks. Couldn't have tires anywhere near the drain field or mound. So we have to rent one.
