I live in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia, near Charlottesville. I have always wanted chickens about five months ago read Everything on chickens.
15 weeks ago I ordered 5 1-Day old female chicks from Meyer Hatchery: 1 Easter Egger, 1 Buff Orpington, 1 White Cochin, 1 Jersey Giant, 1 Silver Laced Polish. They sent me an extra Easter Egger. Since then I've added 3 Golden Comets, 1 Barred Rock and 1 Rhode Island Red.

We have LOTS of predators in the area so we built a portable run for nice weather days and a secure coop/run combo for night-time and bad weather days. The birds were free ranging until I lost one of the Easter Eggers to a freak accident.

I come to this website for all my chicken questions!

Welcome To BYC! Make yourself comfortable and ask any questions your just itching to ask and we'll try to answer them the best we can.

A warm welcome to BYC! I also let me chickens free range my plot and i have had the occasional loss to hawks. Its annoying, but personally i prefer for my chickens to "do their thing" and i have accepted that i will have losses sometimes. It all depends on your predators and the frequency of losses i suppose.

Anyway, welcome once again - lots of info and members willing to help out with any questions you may have so don't hesitate to ask away!
