Hi, we have always had a few chickens to feed the family and sell to some locals. I am seriously thinking about raising organic, free range eggs on a larger scale.
Are there requirements to sell to restaurants, stores,neighbors and friends?
I noticed the laying boxes are often lined with shavings instead of straw.
What is the box/chicken ratio?

We are glad you joined us!
No it is fine to sell eggs to your neighbors, but not anyone else without a permit, and there are a lot of rules and regulations to go through. If you really want to do it, you should look up your local laws and ordinances for selling eggs, every community is differnt for what it requires, but I wouldn't recommend doing it, it's personal to much work for me. :rolleyes: Hope this helps :)
 
Welcome to BYC, Robin. Glad you decided to join our flock. The recommended ratio of nest boxes to hens is typically at least 1 nest box for every 5 hens. Pine shavings is an excellent bedding for nest boxes but it's probably best to avoid cedar shavings as at least according to some authorities they are toxic to chickens. I sell to friends. That's how I get my feed, selling the eggs I don't use.

Ration nest box..halve to chuckle. I have 6 nest boxes for 4 laying hens at a time, and only one..or two will be used. They share often. Little stinks. Many chicken owners find this to be true..there is always a favorite box!

Laws on selling eggs will vary from place to place, so you'll have to find out what they are in your area. @Cynthia12 is right about the girls having a favorite box or two...we have 4 boxes but the 9 chickens we currently have all seem to want to use the same 1.
