Hello I'm a new member, though an avid reader since buying my 3 children each a day old chick May 4 on a whim. They picked out two RIRs and a black australorp. We added 3 EEs 4 weeks later (sold to us as Americanas). By July I had strong suspicions that one of our EE "pullets" was indeed not a pullet. The feed store swore that they are hatchery sexed and it couldn't possibly be a roo. Since Dot (not possible roo) is my daughter's chicken, I caved and bought two more EEs since we were not sure about keeping him. This is how we ended up with our first 8 chickens. Fast forward to October....we were in Rural King once again and they had a tank full of cornish x. My hubby said hey why don't you get some. After looking for a few minutes I told him I really shouldn't cause I didn't want to deal with it in cold weather. The next week when we went back they only had six left. He said it was destiny and I should get them for practice to make sure I could handle it before purchasing a big order in the spring (been checking out red rangers for awhile). I couldn't say no after that logic was thrown my way, so we brought 6 cornish x home. They are now 5 weeks so their time is nearing. BUT the real reason I finally joined....I GOT MY FIRST EGG!!!! I had given up hope of getting any before spring, since their coop isn't lighted. I just had to tell someone, aside from my kids and hubby, that won't roll their eyes at my "kid in a candy store" excitement, and tell me how weird I am. Anywho, there is my six month chicken adventure in one giant, excited, run on sentence.
