Hello I'm a new member, though an avid reader since buying my 3 children each a day old chick May 4 on a whim. They picked out two RIRs and a black australorp. We added 3 EEs 4 weeks later (sold to us as Americanas). By July I had strong suspicions that one of our EE "pullets" was indeed not a pullet. The feed store swore that they are hatchery sexed and it couldn't possibly be a roo. Since Dot (not possible roo) is my daughter's chicken, I caved and bought two more EEs since we were not sure about keeping him. This is how we ended up with our first 8 chickens. Fast forward to October....we were in Rural King once again and they had a tank full of cornish x. My hubby said hey why don't you get some. After looking for a few minutes I told him I really shouldn't cause I didn't want to deal with it in cold weather. The next week when we went back they only had six left. He said it was destiny and I should get them for practice to make sure I could handle it before purchasing a big order in the spring (been checking out red rangers for awhile). I couldn't say no after that logic was thrown my way, so we brought 6 cornish x home. They are now 5 weeks so their time is nearing. BUT the real reason I finally joined....I GOT MY FIRST EGG!!!! I had given up hope of getting any before spring, since their coop isn't lighted. I just had to tell someone, aside from my kids and hubby, that won't roll their eyes at my "kid in a candy store" excitement, and tell me how weird I am. Anywho, there is my six month chicken adventure in one giant, excited, run on sentence.

It sounds like you've already been practicing chicken math, lol. They do tend to add up! Glad you're having fun and the whole family is involved, it's a great hobby.

Congratulations on that first egg! No one here will roll their eyes at that, it's an exciting highlight for everyone raising egg layers.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Congratulations! It's always so egg-citing to get that first egg. When you buy chicks just be aware that (unless they are sex link hybrids or auto sexing breeds) that most hatcheries only guarantee 90 % accuracy on sexed orders and none of them are infallible. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is lots of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

Well thanks for sharing your story! That's super fabulous exciting! I'm having the same experience with my Chocolate Orpington but she started laying and is giving us an egg every single day with no supplemental light! So fun!

Please do tells us how your meat bird adventure goes! I am considering doing the same. I hope not to get attached to the "meaties".

Congrats on your first egg!! It's so fun and delicious work. We killed our first 2 roosters this summer and things went pretty well with all the help on BYC plus YouTube videos to see what to expect.
Yesterday we killed our first Turkey. And we feel a little like old pros... Almost. I can't wait till Thanksgiving to try him. We are planning for meat birds and more Turkeys this Spring.

Welcome to BYC!

Thanks all for the welcomes. Thanks also for the info Michael, I didn't know that the hatchery would only guarantee 90%, but I knew some mistake happened somewhere. The funny part was the feed store maintained the impossibility of a roo even when I showed them his total roo pics. I will definitely post about the meaties, I plan to get a few turkeys next year if my hubby and I deal well with the process.
