What predator is this

If a rat got in....how did it get in?
Small weasel could get in the same way rat did.

I open the coop door and the run and let them free range during the day while I'm working. I'm sure the rat walked in at that time and built its nest behind the nesting boxes. So when I shut them in at night he was right there with them.

I am so distressed right now! Took me forever to allow my ladies to free-arrange...and then I only let them out when I was at home (if its daylight its almost impossible to recop t

Could be that. They don't need a very large space to crawl through, though, to get into your coop. I'm guessing the rat killed your chickens. Many years ago,I had a small coop that sat directly on the ground. One winter I couldn't figure out why the feed consumption was so high and egg production was so low. I was using the deep litter method (although at the time I didn't know it even had a name) of bedding, so I didn't clean out my coop until spring. When I did finally clean it out, the floor had multiple holes chewed through it, and I could see the little buggers moving around down there! They even had the nerve to pop up and look at me! For a few minutes, it was almost like playing "Bop 'Em Gopher" at the arcade. (I lost) We got the rats eradicated, and my coops will forever be elevated on cement blocks to prevent anything from hiding under them ever again.

Got raided while I was gone on an errand. Usually don't leave my girls free ranging if I'm not here but hubby needed to get out (it snowed a couple of inches) when I returned and went to close them up...I found one complete dead carcass on the floor of the co-op..the other 4 missing. As we went up the ramp on our front porch, we surprised on lady who went swimming into the night. Haven't seen her since. Have watched all day...nothing!

I would go out to coop right now with flashlite and listen. Shine on coop as walking to it and watch for large grayish-brown moth like critter flying off from coop or near by.
When an owl takes to the wing I have never been able to hear it and I have had GHO fly off while literally inches away from my ears. Silence is how owls make their living.

Sounds I hear are from branches they land on or take off of.. Very often birds make a ruckus when owl flies as well. My dogs have no trouble tracking owl even without lights as they can see well after dark. On moonlit nights when GHO's most frequently working my poultry areas they can be seen easily. Nights like last with snow on the ground you see pattern on owls by moonlight alone.
