I use extension cord, too. The outdoor cord lays on the ground. All connections are protected from rain and weather by elevating and covered. The cord is plugged into an outdoor GFI outlet. Trouble free for years. The cord goes away when I don't need warmer anymore.

Just get a roll of romex, and hard wire everything.
My coop is wired but then I have the wire hanging out the bottom of the coop with a plug end installed so I run a extension cord out to the coop and plug the entire coop in. Someday I may trench an actual wire out there likely when I install a frostless hydrant
