I think I'll cry when the first one hatches lol. I'd really love some ducklings to hatch with this new incubator I ordered I think I'll get much better results!! god that's awfulWhere you put them isn't going to matter either, What's going to matter is having the temp where it needs to be, the humidity where it needs to be without a whole lot of fluxuation.. proper cleaning keeps the bacteria away...
If I was to guess at your issue I would say probably a humidity issues. That empty spacing tells me the embryo couldn't grow and was being confined by some nasty goofy stuff.. When it died then the bacteria kicked in.. so it probably suffocated first...
