Problem I have never experienced before.

If the hens were lacking protein they would be pecking at other birds also. I have a few hens still moulting with their new feather growth exposed and these hens aren't bothering them. I have had him in there since I posted and it seems to have stopped. Or at the very least if it hasn't stopped they are not getting any feathers yanked out. I am feeding your typical layer feed. When the majority of birds were moulting I was using a higher protein based feed but have now gone back to the norm.
It was just something I had never seen he would allow them to peck at him and yank his feathers and then turn around and mount them. He definitely rules the roost. Maybe he's just into S&M

Well, he IS the rooster lol... They are quite strange sometimes ;)

You mention the molting... I wonder if he didn't somehow "sacrifice" his unneeded tail feathers to his ladies as he might have known they needed the extra protein.... Or something kind of like when they entice the hens over to them by selecting a nice morsel?

It sounds very similar, and if he figured out that letting them have a feather was easier than trying to find a morsel on the ground for them, he would do whatever it took to get the job done ;)

Interesting for sure!

My rooster has not had the extent of damage that yours has but he never argues with the girls when they see something that needs preened on him, he dutifully stands for them to clean something off of him even when the Brahma hen does it and she is brutally rough with her beak. He reminds me of my husband when I am fixing his hair, he knows it is inevitable and just waits for the torture to end.
