Hi all, My friend and BYC devotee introduced me to this site and this is my first post. I have no birds yet, but... hot dang... this all sounds so fun! My eight-year old son has oddly ranked chickens as his number one animal for, oh, five years now, and I'm thinking of surprising him with an actual cage-bird as soon as I can design my own Coop.

BTW: I was thinking of uploading a few photos of my yard to get help on coop- construction and design ideas, but when I tried uploading photos I get the message "Your account does not have the required permissions to access this page." Any hints on what I should do?

You can get a lot of ideas on coops here:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/2/Coops

And if you have questions about building, post them here:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/9/coop-run-design-construction-maintenance

When a person first joins, they have to post several times before they can do everything (it helps cut way back on spammers). Just post a few more messages and you'll be able to do more.

Thanks for joining us. Your son will love your gift!

G'day, and welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. X2 on NorthFlChick; if you haven't done so already, definitely check out the links that she left with you. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

Welcome to BYC. The coops section has designs for all shapes, sizes, etc. Bear in mind that you need to allow 4-5 sq.feet per bird inside the coop (excluding nest boxes & roosts), and 10 sq.feet per bird in the outdoor run. If you will be getting bantam breeds you can get away with a bit less room.

Hey NFC! The links are fantastic and thanks for the tip on my gradual induction. I'll post some photos soon. Great to be here.

Thanks,
