Looking to add a roo and have a few questions.

Currently I've got 5 hens as follows: Barred Rock, Marans/Barred Rock, Australorpe, Silver Laced Wyandotte and a Golden Laced Wyandotte. I've got a friend who's offered me a rooster, she thinks he's half Ameraucana (sp?) and half Plymouth Rock. My question is would he pass on the green egg gene or not after being bred with my brown egg girls?

We are a small hobby farm and I am hoping to raise our own meat birds while keeping some layers as we do sell eggs. Now a few of my girls have never had a rooster with them are there any steps that I should take to introduce them? My Golden I just got a few weeks ago and she isn't totally settled in with all the girls yet, should I be wary bringing in a roo?

You would probably end up with some who lay green, some who lay brown and some olive eggers.

And as far in my experience just introduce the rooster like any other bird, and yes, maybe keep and eye on the golden while all of this is happening!

A proud member of 4h and a strong bearer of the Pacific Northwest and its Cold, not to mention a chicken mommy of 3 Cochins, 1 Sicilian Buttercup, 2 Bantam EE, 1 RIR/EE Mix, 1 Mille Fleur Booted Bantam, and 2 bantam OEGB's, a Black Bearded Silkie and a double laced silver Plymouth Bantam!

There's no such thing as a green egg gene. Green eggs are a result of crossing a blue egg gene with a brown egg gene. Your half Ameraucana rooster (assuming he's half true Ameraucana and not half Easter Egger) will have a blue egg gene and a brown egg gene. When mated to your brown egg laying females if he gives his blue egg gene the offspring will lay green eggs. If he gives his brown egg gene the offspring will lay brown eggs. Since the odds of his giving the blue egg gene or the brown egg gene are 50/50, likely about half of the offspring will lay green eggs and about half will lay brown eggs.
