How do you teach a dog not to kill your chickens and ducks?

Honestly I don't think it is possible.

Even a friend of mine who had a dog who watched over the flock and seemed friendly to them, killed them all in one day.

There are so many folks here who have trusted their friendly dog with their flocks and have had that same disappointment.

I agree either keep the dogs locked up 24/7 or keep the chickens confined to a Fort Knox of a coop and run - that will definitely keep your dogs out. I'm a dog lover but, I would rehome them to someone who doesn't have poultry.

Hi and welcome - personally i would simply ensure that the chickens and dog cannot meet.

All the best

Reading the post from a newbie, prompts me to ask this question. Just curious.

Experience on this subject anyone?

Welcome to BYC! Glad you joined the flock! It's possible, I have 4 Border Collies, they won't even touch my ducks or chickens even if they are pecking the dogs. Usually the dogs will move and the same with the cats. The kittens learned the hard way by having my drake get a hold of the kittens for stalking the hen. Usually though with dogs, once they get the taste for blood they tend to go for it more. Not always but it tends to happen. Especially if it's a wolf hybrid. It depends on how far you're willing to go with discipline and how fast the dog will learn. Don't mistake that for beating the dog to an inch of their life. Discipline should never go to the point of broken bones or other severe injuries. Just my opinion.

Probably safest (and easiest) just to keep them separated. You might try using the Search feature (upper left, under the logo) to read what methods others have used and find out what their success rate has been. For me personally, I'd rather play it safe and keep them apart.

Also you could try posting a new thread in the peafowl section, "How to Prevent Dog From Killing Poultry?" There are a few of us peafowl people there that have dogs near our birds. One of them lets all of her birds free range and her dogs are amazing watch dogs.

Hello!
400

Welcome to BYC and the coop! There's a lot of great peeps here! Feel free to ask lots of questions. But most of all, make yourself at home. I'm so glad you decided to join the BYC family. I look forward to seeing you around BYC. My dogs and chickens share the same yard. They see them as part of the pack. I have a Great Dane and four other dogs. The chickens were attacked by a fox. The dogs defended them.

If you tie the dead hens round the dogs neck it will probably not want to kill any more. Thats what i do. It seems to work.
