Dominant hens new rooster

Hi guys ! I have never had a rooster in the 2 years of chicken keeping. My neighbors moved and offered me their silkie mix roo and I had to say yes after 2 weeks seperation he is still in great health. I introduced him and he is not getting beat up to bad but he for sure is not the top chicken. My question is will he get to breed my hens or will his low order have a effect on that. He does not leave the coop very often do to my bully girls. He roostson the bottom bar.
 
How old is he? Some silkie roosters are more meek than others, I think after a bit of time he will become the rooster. A lot of time the non pushy roosters makes the best rooster.
 
As oldhenlikesdogs infers from her question - i also think age is an important factor. Until he is sufficiently mature to actually act like a roo, he will not have the respect from your girls and will be treated like subordinate. Once he starts titbitting for the girls, and generally being a little more decent about things, then i would say that they will begin to respect him. If he is mature, then maybe he's a late bloomer and if you have standard sized hens then he will be smaller than them i would guess, so that could inhibit his "casanova" manners for a while.

He is a year old so full grown. The ladies are very large compared to him. I have one silkie hen, she is being extra mean to him. He does not seem to challenge any of the girls just gets away from them.

Thanks for the try! :) I was just hoping to have spring babies but if he is just for looks that will work too. lol
 
I agree, give him time, he will exert himself when he feels more comfortable. Being moved to a new home and flock is stressful, at a year old he probably wasn't a dominant rooster at his old home, he's very good looking boy.
 
I didn't have a rooster for about two years in my flock and I think my hens got quite accustomed to not having a male around. When I did introduce "Big Moe" (name of the Easter Egger rooster), it took nearly a year for the older hens to adjust and accept him as the dominant bird. The hens have more easily adjusted to a new rooster in the flock ever since then.
 
Silkies can’t fly. It doesn’t sound like he has matured enough to take over but that may have a lot of influence on where he is roosting. Don’t read too much into where he is roosting.

Have you checked for the bull’s eye? Quite often the lower ranking hens will accept a somewhat lower ranking rooster that the higher ranking hens won’t. You may have fertile eggs. It’s worth checking out.
