Hands on hatching and help

Need alittle help here. I have shipped SWH hatching. So far 3 have hatched with help. 4 had pipped yesterday am. Early this morning 3 started to zip. But stopped only 1/4 of the way around. After 3 hours I opened a area large enough to see inside. There feet are above/around their heads.

Those 3 are doing great. A 4th has hatched on its own but still has unabsorbed yolk. Do I leave it in bator or put it in a cup in the brooder??

The 3rd one to hatch had a lot of goo in bottom of shell. What is that goo??

Pictures are reversed. Bottom one is Katie yesterday when the eggs arrived. The top one is her helping put them in the incubator. She is so excited.

How sweet!

Hi Everyone!
I just set 18 Bantam Cochin eggs, along with 11 button quail and 11 duck eggs(barnyard mix). Not all in the same bator...LOL! I am hatching with my classroom and we are just getting started! So excited!!! Hoping I can join here for support and questions

I have been hatching for quite a few years, but just moved so this is my first hatch in my new classroom. Got my bators stable and made sure my classroom temps stay the same with the heater so fingers crossed all goes well

WVDuckchick has hatched quail... I hatch Call ducks quite regularly, lol... lots of good help and plenty of support here...

AmyLynn is super for chicken help...

And I think we've got many different types of bators between us, lol...

Well....on advice for future hatches I was able to obtain a Little Giant Still Air incubator thinking I could transfer the eggs to Lock them down there to avoid anyone becoming "shrink wrapped". On my way home my young son called to let me know three eggs were pipping and one little one had already thrust her head out but that there was blood on the membrane. Now....hours later, the anxious (chick) one hasn't moved and I can't see it breathing anymore and the other two haven't widened their pip holes any. I fired up the new 'bator just in case and now am paralyzed as whether to remove the remaining 20 eggs to the Still Air or leave everything be and sit on my hands...
If the first chick is deceased when do I remove it and if I'm to open the lid should info ahead and transfer remaining unpipped eggs at that point?
....so much for any sleep....
Did you make a decision yet?

I heard lots of faint cheeping earlier but things seem to be a lot quieter now. Even the cats have lost interest....
You can play chicks chirping/peeping videos by the bator once they start pipping, and that usually keeps them motivated and calling back when they hear it. I use youtube videos.

Quick update on mine:

I put 9 golden sebright eggs in the hatcher - 7 have hatched, one more had pipped, last one I think is DIS

4 silver duckwing OEGBs - all 4 hatched!

2 lavender orpingtons - have pipped internally, but not external yet but its still day 21.

So I am extremely happy this morning.

Did have one semi-assist for a slow poke that stopped zipping halfway. The initial spot dried out on him so I vaselined it up, cracked on around for him a bit, snapped the shell, and he finally pushed his way out. Exhausted little fella, but happy and healthy this morning.

The malepositioned one wasn't quite ready. That's why the membrane is so bloody. I think he would have had to be an assist considering the maleposition position he was in, but when you see that kind of bloody membrane it's better to give them a little more time.
They are adorable.
The yolk one I'd put in a cup lined with damp paper towel and you can put it in the brooder under the heat or back in the bator if you have room.
It looks like a lot of egg goo and membrane to me. In a chick that is ready to hatch, you won't see that much "left overs".
Congrats!

lol... it's just been irritating me lately since the first thing someone usually says is too high of humidity, but I run low humidity and still get it too sometimes... I think there's more than one reason and egg doesn't lose enough moisture... ;)
I figured it was duck, but had to make sure, lol... I run similar humidity, but still get some like that... usually it's the odd eggs, the ones not as similar sized as the majority...

Do you mist or sponge the eggs? Just curious...

As for surviving the goo, it depends on how much goo you're talking about... a little tends to not be a big deal, in fact when they start spinning for zipping, it twirls back and under their butt into the bottom of the egg... a lot of goo is hit or miss... sometimes you can clear enough away to get them safely out, but the biggest issue is them breathing some in... if it gets into their lungs it dries rock hard and will stop their lungs completely...

Leftover albumen is my guess... I wouldn't think it's bacterial cuz it doesn't have a smell... usually bacteria contamination is very closely followed by a foul odor...

I never misted mine before either, air cells usually looked good, but that's when I got the worst gooey babies... bathing was a necessity before fluffing up or the ended up like a turtle stuck in a shell...

Now I mist the last couple to few days before the 'Homestretch', even if air cells look good... I think the cuticle wear does help get that goo down enough for them to spin it to the bottom of the shell...

Also, I've been closely watching my 2 broody Calls... when they take their breaks, they ALWAYS bathe... and if they bathe at the beginning, they will usually return for a quick dunk right before they return to their eggs... they slough off most of the water, but when they get back on the eggs they are definitely damp... and they shuffle the eggs around, rubbing across them all...

Not trying to contradict what AmyLynn said, but Sarkchick, I just had a convo a couple days ago with caesargirl about goo in duck eggs... I quoted my posts so you can read them and hopefully it helps you too...

That awful goo has been an ongoing issue with duck eggs lately, I've been talking with many hatchers, all different types of ducks, and all over the US about it... a little like you saw isn't too bad...

As for the little bit of unabsorbed yolk with the last hatcher, it doesn't look like a big sac so I'd just leave it in the bator since you've got the shelf liner down... :)

Could the time of year, since you are saying it's ongoing lately, have anything to do with it? I know a lot of us are spread over the world, but it seems the US on the average are seeing some unseasonal weather. Could that be playing a part. I based my hypothesis on the way the membrane looked around the first chick.

Thank you. The last one with the yolk hatched on its own. And I did put it in a cup in the brooder. They all have their feet above their heads. And , yes I know, I probably got alittle worried on the first 3. Helped tooooooo much. I've just never seen feet above the head. Their poor bills were stuck between a wing and a foot.
Thank you for this thread. Love it. Could not do this without you guys helping out us novices.

Thanks Rayvn. But while I was sending my SOS. The ling pulled loose from the shell and was bleeding everywhere. Got bleeding stopped. I went ahead and put it in a cup in the brooder. It seems alittle weak. Gave it some nutradrench and save-a-chick. Oh, also put ointment where cord was.

Thanks for joining the thread. And for your input.

Oh, I agree it was a bit early, but that goo woulda still been there is all I was talking about... and depending on the amount of goo, it's sometimes a juggle between being too early and waiting to long that they breath any into their lungs... if it gets there, they don't survive... :(

Lately as in for the last year... really started last spring, happens throughout the seasons and many different types of bators... dunno what it is, but even many years longtime hatchers have run into it and had never seen it before...
