Good morning! I got my first 5 chicks for my birthday last September and promptly bought 16 more the next week. :)

This past Tuesday I got my first egg! My ladies (a couple of them anyway) are no longer freeloaders.

Of my flock of 16, I have at least 4 roosters. Is it a good idea to pick one rooster and rehome the others? I really don't want to cull any of them.

Another question I have: what is your opinion of eggs with dark blood spots? I was raised believing these eggs are not safe to eat.

Have a great day!

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Congratulations on your first eggs :clap It's always so exciting when you find those little treasures. I hope you have many more to come in the future. Often new layers can have blood spots in their first eggs. It's usually just because they are getting their laying machines in order and up and running for the first time. It's quite normal and there is no reason not to eat them. As for your boys I would say yes keep one and try and rehome the rest. Boys have a hard time finding new homes so if you can't bring yourself to cull you may have to have a batchelor pad just for the boys. Fighting could occur over the girls or over breeding of the girls if you keep them all in with them.

Wishing you the very best of luck and enjoy BYC :frow

Hi and welcome to BYC! The Learning Centre is a great place to start off as it has loads of info on anything chicken. Joining your state thread (just type your state in the search box) will also put you in contact with other BYC members in your area.

Seems like chicken maths has you firmly in its grasp - thats the way is should be IMO so well done you!

All sorts of strange things can happen with eggs. Check out this article from the Learning Center, it also includes some reasons why we see what we do with eggs:

It's nice to have you here!
