We just got 7 new chicks, 3 of which are ameraucanas. I would like to find out what color of ameraucana they are, but its hard to tell when they are chicks... I have narrowed it down to Silver and Brown Red (hoping for silver!). I posted some pics of what the chicks look like and the colors i think they might be. the chicks are sort of a blonde/brown with dark stripes on their back and lots of markings. does anyone know what color of ameraucana these chicks are?

this is the color of the chicks. they are about 1 week old right now.

here are some adult silver ameraucanas

and an adult brown red ameraucana.

anyone have any idea of what color the chicks might be? if u do, plz let me know! thanks!

The hen above is not a Brown Red ... though yours may turn out to be similar in appearance. A brown red female with more proper coloring can be found here: http://ameraucanaalliance.org/photos_files/lfbrownredf.JPG. One of our young pullets is in the middle of these girls:

I would echo @CascadiaRiver and wonder about the source of the chicks. I know our local farm store may label them as Ameraucana, but they are really Easter Eggers. There are many threads on here explaining the differences. Yours are not Brown Red and though similar in appearance to Silver chicks - they look perhaps to be gold-based instead of silver. Here's what our Brown Red chicks look like:

Check out http://ameraucanaalliance.org for pictures of other varieties - the site also has chick pics so that you can see the differences in down color.

Whatever they turn out to be - have fun with your new little ones!

thank you so much! this helped very much

I suppose I'll assume that IFA is a Farm store or a Feedstore, in that case they indeed would be considered Easter Eggers, and in that case you can never guess a EE's colour. I have a few and no two are the same, and I've never found two EE's the same anywhere ^^ Should be great birds nonetheless <3

I got 10 EE chicks from a feed store that gets their chicks from Ideal Hatchery in Cameron, TX. 9 look like the picture that you have and then there's one grey one in the bunch I would guess that the chipmunk looking ones are going to be gold and the grey would be a silver. But in not really sure about that at all. Just thought I'd share a pic of what a silver might look like...

X2 It looks like you have brown Easter Eggers. Ameraucanas are very rare to come by. Their Easter Egger counterparts are much more common and 9 times out of 10 you're going to end up with Easter Eggers rather than Ameraucanas at a feed store. Although there's no standard color varieties, it looks like your chicks are going to be brown striped!

From my experience you can never really tell the adult colour. I got a chick that looked like your and turned out about 10 shades of grey, and a solid black chick I got is now silver and black XD Also, I tiny gold EE mix I had, is now a deep solid red XD
