Dying flock - weakness and hunched posture

Help! 4 months ago, we hatched 2 eggs with a broody hen and everything seemed great. One of the chicks stopped growing at about 10 weeks, had a hunched in look with her head drawn into her shoulders. She died.

Then, a member of my original flock had that same posture, hunched in on herself. Her comb grew pale and shrunk. Within 2 weeks, she also died.

The 2nd chick is dying right this moment, of the same thing. Hunched in posture, pale, shrunken comb and wasting away. I separated her when it became obvious she was sick.

And now, another of my original flock is hunching in on herself and her comb is shrinking.

I thought it might be coccidiosis, but the meds didn't help.

I'm at a loss and can't have a necroposy done. I don't want to lose anyone else! Any ideas??

Welcome to BYC? Where are you located? Necropsies are free in a few states, while low cost or higher cost in others. You can also open the chicken up yourself to look for swollen intestines that may be filled with blood. There can be a lot of guess work involved in finding out what illness is killing your chickens. What are they fed, are they wormed, has there been any diarrhea or other symptoms to give some clue to the problem. If you do a necropsy yourself, take some pictures of the organs, and many people here can look at them and offer opinions.

I'm in Oregon. It's too late to do a necropsy, we lost just after my post and she's in the ground :( I'll keep that in mind for next time (hopefully never!!) But I'm fairly sure that one of my older girls is getting sick.

Just realized I didn't respond to everything in your post!

What are they fed: organic layer crumbles
Are they wormed: no
Has there been any diarrhea: Some is runny, clear and white. But there is still good firm stool as well.
Other symptoms to give some clue to the problem: It starts with the hen being low-energy, standing by herself with her head hunched in on her shoulders. Then she gets weak, may fall over if another bird rushes past her too roughly. Her wattle shrinks and gets pale, wings droop (although she continues to eat). Then she just wastes away although she's eating.

What medicine did you try to treat with? Corid (amprollium) is very good, but the chicken has to drink enough of it, or it doesn't work. Sulfa drugs, such as Sulmet or Sulfadimethoxine will treat several of the worst strains of cocci, in addition to some other intestinal and respiratory infections.
