my first chicken egg pipped sometime between midnight and 6 a.m. Saturday morning. Since then the only progress that it has made is break through the membrane and stick it beak out. It has been well over 24 hours and it just keeps its beak out open and closing it and peeping on occasion, to my knowledge it has not tried to break out anymore. Is this unusual or is there a problem? Really would like some advice please. two other eggs has just pipped today. today is day 21 Thanks.

I get kinda hands on.

If it has been pipped like that for 24 hours I would break some shell off around the pip and assist.

But with others pipped I wouldn't want to open the bator to much as it will let humidity out and may shrink wrap the others.

It's been awhile since you posted has the chick made any progress.

Oh, he's right in the tip of the egg. He probably is not in a good position to make progress. Since it has been over 24 hours, if you haven't, I would make sure your humidity in the bator is up past 70% if you can, get some water and a couple q-tips and tweezers if you have them. Pull the egg out and carfully start chipping the shell down toward one side to see the position of the chick. If you don't run into any veining you can start a zip line around the egg so that the cap can come off. If you see blood or thick veining, stop and put it back as it's not ready.

If you have the humidity up you should be prefectly fine. I run at 75% humidity and open my bator often during hatching. Just make sure it's timely and your bator recovers humidity. I have NEVER lost a pipper/zipper and I am a complete meddler.
 
Ok I chipped the shell up from her pip to bottom of air sac and all the way around than left her in the incubator. She broke out from there. Thank God. This my first hatch and it has been quite stressful but very rewarding. she and another little chick that hatched seems to be doing very well. I have still have others to go. this is day 22.

thank you for your help, it wasn't for your reply she may still be struggling and possibly could have died.

That's great! Glad to hear that it's out. Is it doing well still? I didn't think it'd make it out on it's own based on how/where it pipped and the amount of time it had been pipped. After the hatch is over, I would definitely check the thermometer(s) it might be runing just slightly lower than it needs to be.
