Overcrowded in the brooder vs. Cold in the coop

You can always do as I mentioned, put them out during the day and move them somewhere warmer at night, which can be smaller, this is something I do a lot, the chicks are exhausted from playing all day that they sleep all night and are eagerly waiting to go the next day, it can also help with the mental transition, they will often cry horribly if just taken somewhere and then night comes and they get frightened, I prefer a slower transition, then another week or two and they would be fine being left out.

That's what I did 60 watt red outside bulb to my 5 wks old and temps here in ga around low 40 at night and like today 78 outside...

If you want to buy yourself another week or two, I would suggest using an dog/child exercise pen in the garage. An "ex pen" is portable and you can shape it in to a large rectangle (approx 3'X5'). That is what we used for our seven chicks when they outgrew their brooder. It worked out really well. We simply placed some plywood on the floor, put the ex pen on top, lined the sides with cardboard to keep the bedding in and added the pine shavings. There is plenty of room to add a small roost, water and feeder. Good luck.

Just a thought, we ran an outside heavy duty extension cord to the coop for the lamp...don't know if you can do this but a possibility.

Finally Fiday!!! The weather decided to corporate with us today.... which means coop building and outside play time!! Thank goodness!!!

Hoping to get them officially moved out this weekend if the nights don't get too cold. For now, they're testing out the run while dad finishes their house

They look so cute and confused. Happy you can finally get somewhere. You do know you have a rooster right?

Considering how feathered out they are..which is quite a bit they would have been fine with 39 degrees and a cuddle box. The cuddle box works wonders. I'm up here in NY. They go from from inside to outside with lots of fluffy straw and a nice cuddle box and they aren't all the way feathered out. No mortalities.
